Haruhi was gazing up at a clear night sky. Kyon was patiently keeping her company.

"See those stars?" Haruhi pointed at a faint nebulous band directly above them.

"Yeah," Kyon said.

"Well, you don't," Haruhi said. "It took the light that we see hundreds of millions of years to reach our eyes. In that time, those stars might have ceased to exist."

Haruhi sighed wistfully. "It's an illusion. Even if we could escape our current circumstances, it's too late to experience it."

"Like my normal mundane high-school career?" Kyon asked dryly.

Haruhi sighed again, but smiled. "Yeah, something like that."
