PLEASANT HILL--Chester H. Jenkins, 66, formerly of the Alton and Godfrey area, died at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital in Columbia, Mo., following 13 months of failing health.
For the last 10 years, he and his wife, the former Marie White, whom he married on Apr. 16, 1932, in Virden, were caretakers at the Alton-Wood River Sportsmen's Club Hunting and Fishing Lodge in Calhoun County.
Earlier he had served as a Godfrey Township Fire Department captain, and in 1970 retired from Teamster Local 525.
Born in Girard, Ill., he was the son of Myrtie (Adcock) Jenkins of Carlinville and the late Oliver O. Jenkins.
Surviving, in addition to his wife and mother, are two daughters, Joan Schudel of Godfrey and Betty Danner of Dover, Del.; two sons, James H. of Richardson, Texas, and Chester M. "Sam" Jenkins of Republic, Wash.; 18 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; three brothers, Carl of Clearwater, Fla., Cleo of Wood River and Coy of Godfrey; and two sisters, Velda Fitzgerrel and Virginia Scharfenberg, both of Carlinville.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Gent Funeral Home, Alton, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. R. Virgil Santee officiating.
Burial will be in Godfrey cemetery.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Methodist Church in Pleasant Hill, and the emergency medical technicians of Pleasant Hill and Godfrey Fire Department have been named as a memorial.
