Melvin C. BETTIS

Melvin Clyde Bettis, 92, of Palmyra died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Carlinville Area Hospital.

He was born July 12, 1908, in Palmyra, a son of George Washington and Dora Frances Shores Bettis. He married Dorothy Dee Fox on December 20, 1928, in Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Otto Bettis, Clarence Bettis, Orville Bettis, Freddie Bettis, Welcome Bettis, Carl Bettis and Oren Bettis in infancy; five sisters, Ora Pierson, Rae Crawford, Annie Hartsook, Grace Edminston and Mary Bettis in infancy.

Mr. Bettis was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and the First Baptist Church of Palmyra.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, at Stults-Neece Funeral Home in Palmyra.

Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Palmyra.

Surviving are his wife; three sons and daughters-in-laws, Glen and Jean Bettis of Palmyra, Lester and Joyce Bettis of Carlinville and Norman and Sandra Bettis of Bloomington; a daughter, Wanda June Ruyle of Orland Park; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rhea Bristow of Palmyra.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Palmyra.
