Charles H. "Chuck" Jenkins, 74, and Virginia Jenkins, 78, of Palmyra died at 9:25 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, 1996, in an automobile accident in Springfield.
Charles was born Dec. 12, 1921 in Girard, the son of Asa and Sadie Adcock Jenkins. He and the former Virginia Prichard were married July 6, 1941 in St. Charles, Mo. Preceding in death were brothers and sister, Kenny, Carroll, Keith and Wanda Jenkins.
A World War II Navy veteran, Mr. Jenkins was a retired coal miner, working 40 years at Freeman Mine in Farmersville. He was a member of the United Mine Workers Association and charter member of the VFW in Las Vegas, Nev.
Virginia Jenkins was born July 30, 1918 in Taylorville, the daughter of Vernon and Louise Lewis Prichard. A brother, Keith Prichard, is predeceased.
Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. James (Wanda) Mayfield of Girard; four grandchildren, Randy Mayfield of Girard, Jenny VanDebenter of Springfield, Lisa Miller, Nilwood, and Mike Mayfield of San Diego, Calif.; two great-grandchildren; Mr. Jenkins' brothers, Holland Gene Jenkins of Silver Springs, Md., Cliff Jenkins of Girard and Donnie Jenkins of Apple Valley, Calif.; several nieces and nephews.
Combined services were 10 a.m. Wednesday at Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Girard, Rev. August Sperl officiating. Mike Barnard was organist. Burial was in Girard cemetery where military rites were given by David Hart Post American Legion 115. Pallbearers were Randy Mayfield, Don and Brad Jenkins, Bob Grooms, Warren Jennings and Larry Crays.
Memorials are suggested to Holy Rosary Church in Palmyra.
